Why We Use Optomap

Traditional retinal exams view only about 15% of the retina at a time. Optomap's ultra-widefield technology captures 82% in one image — revealing peripheral retinal conditions that can easily go undetected with standard methods.

The digital image is stored permanently in your record, allowing our optometrists to compare year over year and detect subtle changes that might otherwise be missed between visits.

Conditions Optomap Helps Detect

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Retinal detachments and tears
  • Glaucoma-related optic nerve damage
  • Hypertensive retinopathy
  • Peripheral retinal lesions

Optomap FAQs

What is Optomap retinal imaging?
Optomap is an ultra-widefield retinal imaging system that captures 82% of your retina in a single image — without dilation in most cases. It gives our optometrists a detailed, permanent digital record of your retinal health that can be compared at future visits to detect subtle changes over time.
Is Optomap better than dilation?
Optomap and dilation serve complementary roles. Optomap provides an instant, comprehensive view of the peripheral retina without the side effects of dilation (blurry vision, light sensitivity). In some cases, dilation is still recommended — particularly when a detailed view of the central retina or optic nerve is needed. Our doctors will advise which is best for you.
Is Optomap painful or uncomfortable?
Optomap is completely painless and takes less than a second to capture. You simply look into the device and a flash of light takes the image. There are no eye drops and no waiting for pupils to dilate.
What conditions can Optomap detect?
Optomap can reveal early signs of retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma damage, hypertensive retinopathy, retinal tears, and other peripheral retinal conditions that can be missed with standard exam techniques.
Does insurance cover Optomap?
Optomap is often available as an optional add-on to a standard eye exam. Some insurance plans cover it when medically indicated. Our team can check your specific benefits and let you know the out-of-pocket cost if it is not covered.
