What to Expect During Your Exam

A comprehensive eye exam at Mill Creek Family Eye Center is far more than a simple vision check. Our optometrists evaluate the full health of your eyes — detecting problems early when they are easiest to treat.

We use advanced diagnostic technology, including Optomap retinal imaging, to get a detailed view of your retinal health without dilation in most cases. Your exam includes:

  • Visual acuity and prescription assessment
  • Eye pressure (glaucoma screening)
  • Binocular vision and eye coordination
  • Retinal and optic nerve evaluation
  • Screening for cataracts, macular degeneration & more
  • Contact lens evaluation (if applicable)

First exam before starting school, then annually. We check for myopia, amblyopia, and alignment issues that can affect learning.

School-Age Children

Annual exams ensure vision doesn't interfere with learning. We screen for myopia progression and offer management options.

Adults (18–60)

Annual or biennial exams keep your prescription accurate and monitor for early signs of eye disease.

Seniors (60+)

More frequent monitoring for age-related conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

Eye Exam FAQs

How often should I get a comprehensive eye exam?
Adults should have a comprehensive eye exam every 1–2 years. Children should have their first eye exam by age 5, before starting school, and annually after that. Patients with diabetes, glaucoma risk, or other conditions may need more frequent exams.
What is included in a comprehensive eye exam in Mill Creek?
Our exams include a full review of your vision, eye health, eye pressure measurement, retinal evaluation, and — when needed — Optomap imaging. We check for conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.
Does insurance cover eye exams?
Most vision plans (VSP, EyeMed, Premera, Regence) cover one annual comprehensive exam. Medical insurance (Aetna, Cigna, Medicare) covers exams related to eye disease management. We accept 15 insurance plans — call us and we'll verify your benefits.
Do you offer eye exams for children in Mill Creek?
Yes. We provide pediatric eye exams for children 5 and older. Early detection of vision problems is critical for learning and development, and we recommend a first exam before starting school.
How long does an eye exam take?
A typical comprehensive exam takes 45–60 minutes. If dilation is needed, plan for an extra 30 minutes as your eyes will need time to respond to the drops.
