Conditions We Diagnose & Manage

Many sight-threatening eye diseases have no early symptoms. Regular medical eye exams are the only way to detect them before vision is lost.

Glaucoma

The 'silent thief of sight.' We monitor eye pressure, optic nerve health, and visual fields to detect and manage glaucoma early.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related AMD can rob central vision. Early detection through retinal imaging enables lifestyle changes and monitoring to slow progression.

Cataracts

We monitor lens clarity and vision changes, and co-manage surgical referrals with trusted ophthalmology partners when the time comes.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Annual dilated exams detect diabetic damage to the retinal blood vessels before vision is affected. See our Diabetic Eye Exams page.

Uveitis

Inflammation inside the eye that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent permanent damage.

Ocular Surface Disease

Corneal conditions, allergies, and chronic dry eye affecting the surface of the eye — diagnosed and treated with targeted therapies.

Protect Your Vision with Mill Creek Family Eye Center

Many eye diseases are covered under medical insurance, not vision insurance. We accept Medicare, Aetna, Premera, Regence & more.

Medical Eye Care FAQs

What eye diseases do you diagnose and treat?
We diagnose and manage glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, ocular surface disease, and many other conditions. For surgical conditions (such as cataracts requiring surgery), we co-manage with trusted ophthalmology partners.
Can an optometrist treat glaucoma?
Yes. Optometrists in Washington State are licensed to diagnose and manage glaucoma, including prescribing glaucoma medications. We monitor intraocular pressure, optic nerve health, and visual fields to detect and manage glaucoma before significant vision loss occurs.
Does insurance cover medical eye care visits?
Yes. Medical eye care visits — for conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and uveitis — are billed through medical insurance (Medicare, Aetna, Premera, Regence, Cigna), not vision insurance. Both types of coverage may apply depending on the visit.
How is macular degeneration detected?
We use dilated retinal exams and Optomap imaging to evaluate the macula for drusen, pigment changes, and other early signs of AMD. Early detection allows for lifestyle interventions and monitoring that can significantly slow progression.
What is Optomap retinal imaging?
Optomap is an ultra-widefield retinal imaging system that captures 82% of the retina in a single image — without dilation in most cases. It gives our doctors a detailed, permanent record of your retinal health for comparison at future visits.
