Back to School Eye Exam Guide — Mill Creek, WA

You've got the backpack and the supplies. Don't forget the most important back-to-school checkup: the eye exam.

Why Eye Exams Belong on the Back-to-School Checklist

Vision problems are the number one undiagnosed health issue affecting children's academic performance. An estimated 1 in 4 school-age children has a vision condition that impacts learning — and most don't know it.

Children rarely complain about blurry vision because they assume everyone sees the way they do. Without clear vision, a child may struggle to read the board, track text while reading, or maintain focus — and these struggles often get labeled as behavioral or learning issues rather than the vision problems they are.

School Screenings Are Not Enough

Many parents assume that passing a school vision screening means their child's vision is fine. Unfortunately, school screenings only test basic distance vision — they miss conditions like farsightedness, eye teaming problems, and early myopia that can significantly impact classroom performance.

What to Expect at a Back-to-School Eye Exam

Full visual acuity test at all distances
Eye coordination and teaming evaluation
Color vision screening
Depth perception assessment
Eye health exam (retina, optic nerve, pressure)
Myopia progression check (for children already wearing glasses)
